I’m Mike Vardy, and I help people build a better relationship with time — not by controlling it, but by working with it. Through my writing, courses, and community, I explore how intention and attention shape a more meaningful life — one rooted in the original idea of productiveness over productivity.
No endless notifications. No juggling five tasks at once. Just deep, uninterrupted time devoted to what mattered most.
For some, that could have meant committing to a Daily Theme and letting it guide every decision. Others might've leaned on a Monthly Theme that allowed them to weave focus into the day’s natural flow. Some may have followed a specific Attention Path—Time-Based, Resource-Based, Energy-Based, Activity-Based, or Theme-Based—aligning their tasks with the path that made the most sense for them as they made their way through the day.
None of that happened by accident. It happened because they chose it. They set boundaries, designed their day with purpose, and honoured those decisions.
Immersive focus isn’t reserved for special events like iF Day – what we call our "immersive focus" days. It’s available anytime you decide to step into it—and you can enter through whichever TimeCrafting doorway makes the most sense for you.

Nostalgia meets focus in a way only radio can deliver. Dive into WKRP: Johnny Fever Mix—a three-hour show composed entirely of Dr. Johnny Fever’s on-air bits and song choices from WKRP in Cincinnati. It’s a reminder of how music and deliberate curation can create a distinctive, immersive zone of flow, even one as fondly remembered as a fictional DJ’s snow‑day marathon. Listen to it here.

Immersive focus isn’t only about avoiding interruptions—it’s also about recovering from them. Research from the University of Washington, led by Sophie Leroy and Theresa Glomb, shows that creating a quick “ready-to-resume” plan when you’re interrupted helps reduce attention residue—the lingering pull of the task you just left behind. Even a short note about where you stopped and what comes next can clear the way to focus more fully on what’s in front of you.
Think of it as another tool for crafting immersive focus. By making re-entry smoother, you protect both the task you paused and the one that just arrived. Read it here.
The Final Flicker
Immersive focus starts with an intentional choice—whether it’s a theme, a sphere, or an attention path. It begins the moment you decide what deserves your attention most and align your actions accordingly.
Once you’ve made that choice, the rest is about devotion. Protect it, return to it, and see it through. That’s how immersive focus becomes the rule rather than the exception.
See you later, Mike
P.S. The Forge Your Future Challenge is about making those kinds of intentional choices for your future. We’ll meet September 3–5 for two hours each day—virtually, and for free. If you’re ready to focus on what matters most, join us here.
Thanks for reading.

Thoughts and practices for working with time—not against it.

The Lantern by Mike Vardy Vol. 2, Issue 11 | May 9, 2026 Hello Reader, You may have noticed this arrived a little later than usual. That was intentional. At 1:40pm on Friday, I got an email about something called the Mind Over Manuscript Challenge — a free 5-day writing challenge running this week through Pages & Platforms. It resonated immediately. I had something to say about it. So I wrote a broadcast email and sent it Friday evening, sharing three things that TimeCrafting gave me that...
Hello Reader,This morning my head was full. Not overwhelmed. Just... swirling. So I went for a walk. No headphones. No agenda. Just outside. I wasn't treading water out there — I was treading ground. There's a difference. Treading water keeps you from sinking. Walking actually moves you somewhere. When you're swirling or when you're stagnant, the steps you take by walking can help you recognize the next steps you must take — the ones that don't involve walking at all. You don't need long. You...
The Lantern by Mike Vardy Vol. 2, Issue 10 | May 2, 2026 Hello Reader, I've had "The Circle Game" stuck in my head for three days now. Which is fine — it's a great song. But it's been bothering me in a specific way that I can't leave alone. It's not a circle. Joni Mitchell wrote about seasons coming and going, about children becoming adults, about time spinning us around and around. The imagery is a carousel. A circle. You leave, you come back, you're where you started. Except you're not....
