What You Didn't Plant | The Lantern

Hello Reader,

It’s Thanksgiving weekend here in Canada. Ours has always been a harvest holiday first, which is why it lands in early October, while the fields are still being cleared and the leaves haven’t finished turning.

I’ve been thinking about what a harvest actually is. A farmer plants the seed, sure. But the farmer doesn’t make the rain, or the soil, or a season that happened to be kind this year instead of cruel. Most of what comes out of the ground was never really theirs to produce. It was theirs to tend.

Productivity culture doesn’t like that idea much. It wants you to believe everything on your plate is output, and all of that output is yours. You set the goals, you did the work, you earned the results. It keeps score in the first person. There’s some truth in that, but it leaves out most of the picture.

This year I forged something. After fifteen years of circling one idea, Productiveness went out into the world. I wrote it, and I’m proud of it. But when I look honestly, I can see how much of it I didn’t make: the conversations that shaped it, and the early readers from the TimeCrafting Trust community who told me what was working and what wasn’t. It also came from you, the readers of this newsletter, who let me practise these ideas in public long before they were bound between covers. I planted it. A lot of other people provided the weather.

That’s where productiveness parts ways with productivity.

Productiveness is doing what matters on purpose, but it never pretends you did it alone. Grace is one of its nine principles, and grace and gratitude share a root: both come from the Latin gratus, meaning pleasing, thankful, freely given. That last part, freely given, is what productivity can’t account for. Grace takes gratitude out of the performance of counting blessings and turns it into something you can actually receive. Most of us are far better at giving thanks than at taking in what we’re thankful for.

That’s why I like that this issue lands on a Saturday. I give each day of my week a theme, and Saturday’s is stewardship: caring for what’s already been given to you. That’s a pretty good working definition of gratitude, too.

So before the table gets set this weekend, try one small thing. Look at something good in your life and ask what part of it you didn’t plant. Then let yourself receive it. No accounting required.

The Final Flicker

You planted some of it. Be grateful for the weather.

See you later,
Mike

P.S. Speaking of what's freely given: every morning we each get the same twenty-four hours, no matter what we did with yesterday's. On Tuesday, the day after Thanksgiving here in Canada, I'm presenting a free twenty-minute session at The Grand Productivity Group called Attention Economics. It's about treating that daily gift as something abundant rather than scarce. It runs at 1 PM PT / 4 PM ET / 9 PM UK. Save your spot here. (Registering gets you the replay if you can't make it live.)

Thanks for reading.

Your time is valuable, and I don’t take it for granted. In a world pulling us in all directions, thanks for choosing The Lantern.

The Practice of Productiveness

I’m Mike Vardy, and I help people build a better relationship with time — not by controlling it, but by working with it. Through my writing, courses, and community, I explore how intention and attention shape a more meaningful life — one rooted in the original idea of productiveness over productivity.

Hello Reader, A while back, I sat down with my daughter and recorded a conversation about what she's learned from me. Not the frameworks. Not the acronyms. I wanted to know what actually made it through. Two things stay with me from that conversation. The first is that somewhere in it, I credited a line to Oscar Wilde that belongs to Thoreau: "It is not enough to be busy; so are the ants. The question is: what are we busy about?" She didn't care who said it. The question landed anyway, which...

The Lantern by Mike Vardy Vol. 2, Issue 31 | October 3rd, 2026 Hello Reader, A few weeks ago in New York, my daughter turned the tables on me. I was there for Podcast Movement, Grace came down from Montreal, and we sat in a studio at Kit with her asking me the questions for an episode of A Productive Conversation. (You can watch the episode here or listen to it here.) One of the questions I didn’t see coming: of the nine principles of Productiveness, which one is hardest for me to actually...

Hello Reader, A few weeks ago my daughter Grace sat me down in a studio in New York and asked me questions about Productiveness that nobody else has asked. That conversation has become the most-watched thing on my YouTube channel in months. It also made something hard to ignore. I've been slack on YouTube. For a long while, the only thing happening there was a Wednesday livestream. That changes tomorrow. Starting Friday, October 2, there's a new video on the channel every Friday at 8 AM...
