Spring Forward, Fall Back | The Lantern

The Lantern

Vol. 1, Issue 2 | March 8, 2025

Hello Reader,

This weekend, you “lose” an hour. Or at least, that’s how it feels.

Daylight Savings forces an adjustment overnight. One day, your routine makes sense. The next, your body is confused, your sleep is off, and the rhythms you counted on feel disrupted.

Sound familiar?

It’s not just about the clocks—it’s about how we experience time. How often do we force ourselves into someone else’s rhythm? A work schedule that doesn’t fit? A morning routine that sounded great but doesn’t feel right? The pressure to be productive at times that don’t align with your energy?

Here’s the thing: You don’t control time, but you do control how you interact with it.

Instead of fighting this weekend’s shift, use it as a reminder to pay attention to your own rhythms. When do you feel most focused? When do you need rest? What if you stopped forcing yourself into someone else’s time structure and started crafting one that actually worked for you?

Look

The time shift can mess with your energy, making it harder to focus and get things done. But what if there was a simple way to stay productive—even when you’re tired or under the weather? Over on YouTube, I share a go-to strategy that helps me keep momentum, even on low-energy days. It’s easy to implement and works whether you’re dealing with lost sleep or just feeling off. Watch it here.

Listen

Adjusting to change—whether it’s a time shift, a new habit, or a different way of working—can feel overwhelming. But what if small adjustments were the key to big transformations? In this episode of The Art of Manliness, BJ Fogg, author of Tiny Habits, breaks down how small, strategic shifts in behaviour can lead to lasting change—without relying on willpower alone. Listen here.

And if you’re interested in experiments in time, attention, and productivity, don’t miss this week’s episode of A Productive Conversation, where I spoke with Anne-Laure Le Cunff about the power of mindful experimentation. Listen to it here.

Learn

Last week, we explored the idea that March is the real beginning—but beginnings aren’t always perfect. That’s where tolerance comes in. This week's blog post explores the difference between precision and tolerance, and why knowing when to be exact and when to allow flexibility can make all the difference in how we approach time, work, and life. Read it here.

In case you missed last week's edition of The Lantern, you can read it here.

The Final Flicker

We think of time as something that moves forward, but in reality, it’s how we move through time that matters.

This weekend’s time shift is just another reminder—some changes happen suddenly, others take time to settle. But whether it’s the clock, your schedule, or your own energy, the real question is:

Are you adjusting to time, or are you letting it adjust you?

See you later,
Mike

Thanks for reading.

Your time is valuable, and I don’t take it for granted. In a world pulling us in all directions, thanks for choosing The Lantern.

Hello Reader, If you’re anywhere near Victoria, BC—or you’re up for a short trip—I’d love to invite you to a special evening I’ve been quietly planning for a while. On Tuesday May 13th, I’m hosting a launch party for The Productivity Diet at one of my favourite local spots: Koffi on Haultain. This won’t be a stuffy book event. It’ll be a cozy gathering with coffee, conversation, and a few fun (and irreverent) surprises. I’ll do a short talk, maybe a little reading, and we’ll hang out, sign...

The Lantern by Mike Vardy Vol. 1, Issue 8 | April 19, 2025 Hello Reader, There’s something beautifully honest about wrestling. Yes, it’s choreographed. Yes, the outcomes are scripted. But the effort? The timing? The trust between performers? That’s real. Wrestling isn’t just about conflict—it’s about tension. Between who you are and who you’re becoming. Between doing the work and working the crowd. Between staying down and standing up. I’ve found myself wrestling with a lot lately. With my...
