Spring Forward, Fall Back | The Lantern

The Lantern

Hello Reader,

This weekend, you “lose” an hour. Or at least, that’s how it feels.

Daylight Savings forces an adjustment overnight. One day, your routine makes sense. The next, your body is confused, your sleep is off, and the rhythms you counted on feel disrupted.

Sound familiar?

It’s not just about the clocks—it’s about how we experience time. How often do we force ourselves into someone else’s rhythm? A work schedule that doesn’t fit? A morning routine that sounded great but doesn’t feel right? The pressure to be productive at times that don’t align with your energy?

Here’s the thing: You don’t control time, but you do control how you interact with it.

Instead of fighting this weekend’s shift, use it as a reminder to pay attention to your own rhythms. When do you feel most focused? When do you need rest? What if you stopped forcing yourself into someone else’s time structure and started crafting one that actually worked for you?

Look

The time shift can mess with your energy, making it harder to focus and get things done. But what if there was a simple way to stay productive—even when you’re tired or under the weather? Over on YouTube, I share a go-to strategy that helps me keep momentum, even on low-energy days. It’s easy to implement and works whether you’re dealing with lost sleep or just feeling off. Watch it here.

Listen

Adjusting to change—whether it’s a time shift, a new habit, or a different way of working—can feel overwhelming. But what if small adjustments were the key to big transformations? In this episode of The Art of Manliness, BJ Fogg, author of Tiny Habits, breaks down how small, strategic shifts in behaviour can lead to lasting change—without relying on willpower alone. Listen here.

And if you’re interested in experiments in time, attention, and productivity, don’t miss this week’s episode of A Productive Conversation, where I spoke with Anne-Laure Le Cunff about the power of mindful experimentation. Listen to it here.

Learn

Last week, we explored the idea that March is the real beginning—but beginnings aren’t always perfect. That’s where tolerance comes in. This week's blog post explores the difference between precision and tolerance, and why knowing when to be exact and when to allow flexibility can make all the difference in how we approach time, work, and life. Read it here.

In case you missed last week's edition of The Lantern, you can read it here.

The Final Flicker

We think of time as something that moves forward, but in reality, it’s how we move through time that matters.

This weekend’s time shift is just another reminder—some changes happen suddenly, others take time to settle. But whether it’s the clock, your schedule, or your own energy, the real question is:

Are you adjusting to time, or are you letting it adjust you?

See you later,
Mike

Thanks for reading.

Your time is valuable, and I don’t take it for granted. In a world pulling us in all directions, thanks for choosing The Lantern.

The Lantern by Mike Vardy Vol. 1, Issue 5 | March 29, 2025 Hello Reader, We don’t like stopping. We convince ourselves that rest equals laziness, that pausing means falling behind. But what if stopping was actually a strategy? When was the last time you gave yourself permission to pause? We push through exhaustion. We ignore burnout. We tell ourselves, “Just one more thing,” before allowing a break. But here’s what I’ve learned: Pausing isn’t quitting—it’s recalibrating. The best athletes...

The Lantern by Mike Vardy Vol. 1, Issue 4 | March 22, 2025 Hello Reader, March is weird. Not quite winter, not quite spring. Some days, the world feels new and full of possibility. Other days, it’s cold and uninviting. Change is happening, but it’s not immediate—it’s gradual, unpredictable, and sometimes messy. I remember one year when I was waiting for a big shift in my life. I had put in the work. I knew the transition was coming. But I was stuck in the middle—the limbo where nothing is...

The Lantern by Mike Vardy Vol. 1, Issue 3 | March 15, 2025 Hello Reader, Starting something new always feels exciting. A new project. A fresh habit. A commitment to change. You’re energized, focused, and convinced this time will be different. And then? The enthusiasm... fades. This is where most people quit—not because their goal was impossible, but because they expected motivation to carry them the whole way. And when it doesn’t? It feels like failure. But here’s the truth: This moment—right...
